Devotional

Day 1 Focus – Love

The focus for today is our first love: Jesus

It is good as we begin, to come before God with Praise. So start each devotional time by giving Him praise and proclaim His goodness, holiness, and righteousness in words, songs, and scripture.

The focus for today, from the Going Deeper series, is Love. Fasting is a way of saying to God, and reminding ourselves, the He is our first love. Jesus reminds us of the first commandment in Mark: Mark 12:30 AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.’ This is the first commandment.

As Andrew mentioned, one of the ‘buckets’ for the purpose of fasting is a turning from sin, or ‘getting right with God’. It is mentioned in several passages that the mere process of fasting is not the point, but a ‘rending of the heart’ and a true submission to God. Use this time to check that God is Number One in your life.

If we are not ‘right with God’, our relationship with God is hindered and it will be difficult if not impossible to hear from Him. So lets start our time with an introspective look at where we are, as individuals, in our relationship with God.

Ask yourself some questions to help expose any areas of your life where you may not be right with God, and allow the Holy Spirit to reveal those to you. Be honest. This is just between you and God.

Confirm with God how He wants you to fast, and use the extra time created by ‘not doing’ something to spending time with Him.
